Arly Velásquez
Mono-skier who has represented Mexico at five Winter Paralympics, from Vancouver 2010 to 2026.
Arly Aristides Velásquez Peñaloza
Arly Velásquez was born on 17 August 1988. A mountain-biking accident at thirteen broke his vertebrae and left him with an irreversible spinal-cord injury; he was told he would never walk again and would remain bedridden. At fifteen he tried shot put, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair javelin, tennis and swimming before discovering mono-skiing, in which the athlete sits on a single ski and steers with the hips and crutch-like poles.
He represented Mexico at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Paralympics alongside Armando Ruiz, and again in 2014, 2018 and 2022, and competed once more at the 2026 Games. He studied film in Argentina.
How the name is written
