Nelson Velázquez was born on 26 December 1998 in Puerto Rico and was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the fifth round of the 2017 draft. After the pandemic wiped out the 2020 minor-league season, he hit 20 home runs across two levels in 2021 and was named Most Valuable Player of the Arizona Fall League, batting .366 with nine homers in 26 games.

He made his major-league debut on 30 May 2022, collecting a hit in his first at-bat, and hit his first home run that July. In April 2023 his first career grand slam capped a Cubs comeback from 7–0 down against Seattle. Traded to the Kansas City Royals on 31 July 2023, he has since played for the St. Louis Cardinals and the Houston Astros as an outfielder and designated hitter.
