Andrew Velazquez was born on 14 July 1994 and grew up in Morris Park in the Bronx, the son of a New York City police detective and a schoolteacher. At Fordham Preparatory School he moved from centre field to shortstop in his senior year, was named the New York Post's All-Bronx Player of the Year and also sprinted and high-jumped for the track team.

Drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the seventh round in 2012, he passed up a Virginia Tech scholarship to sign. In 2014, with South Bend, he reached base in 74 consecutive games, breaking the minor-league record of 71 set by Kevin Millar and tied by Kevin Youkilis, and was named Midwest League Prospect of the Year; the nickname "Squid" dates from those years.

Traded to Tampa Bay in November 2014, he went on to play in the majors for the Rays, Cleveland Indians, Baltimore Orioles, his home-town New York Yankees, Los Angeles Angels and Kansas City Royals.
