Wilmer Velásquez was born on 28 April 1972 and spent his entire Honduran club career with Olimpia, debuting on 1 November 1990 against Platense and scoring his first goal in January 1992 against city rivals Motagua. Spells abroad with Concepción in Chile, Sport Recife in Brazil and Atlas in Mexico were brief, but at home he became the all-time top scorer of the Honduran National League with 196 goals and won twelve league titles, all with Olimpia; across competitive matches he scored 318 goals, 258 of them for the club.

For the national team he scored four goals on his debut against Panama at the 1997 UNCAF Nations Cup and finished with 35 goals in 47 caps, playing the Gold Cups of 1998, 2003 and 2005. In 2005 the International Federation of Football History and Statistics ranked him among the world's top goalscorers, second only to Adriano. He was part of the side that qualified Honduras for the 2010 World Cup, the country's first since 1982, and retired after the 2009 Clausura. Alongside Carlos Pavón he is regarded as the greatest striker Honduras has produced.
