Ricardo Velázquez Bosco

Architect of Madrid's Palacio de Cristal, the Palacio de Velázquez and the Ministry of Agriculture; excavator of Madinat al-Zahra.

Ricardo Velázquez Bosco

 Born — 1843
 Died — 1923
 Country — Spain

Ricardo Velázquez Bosco was born in Burgos in 1843 and made his career in Madrid, where he taught at the School of Architecture and, from 1910, directed it. His best-known buildings stand in the Parque del Buen Retiro: the Palacio de Velázquez, built for the 1883 National Mining Exhibition and named after him, with ceramic tiles by Daniel Zuloaga, and the nearby Palacio de Cristal, both influenced by London's Crystal Palace. He also designed the massive Ministry of Agriculture building.

A member of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, he was known for a resounding treatment of volume and the prolific use of brightly glazed ceramics on façades — an eclectic, regionalist style that shaped his pupil Antonio Palacios. As archaeologist and restorer he worked on the Mosque–Cathedral of Córdoba and directed the important excavations of the caliphal city of Madinat al-Zahra nearby. He died in Madrid in August 1923.
