Regine Velasquez

"Asia's Songbird" — the best-selling Filipino recording artist of all time.

Regina Encarnacion Ansong Velasquez

 Born — 1970
 Country — Philippines

Regine Velasquez was born on 22 April 1970 and rose to fame after winning the television talent show Ang Bagong Kampeon in 1984 and the Asia Pacific Singing Contest in 1989. After an early single under the name Chona, she released her debut album Regine (1987) and explored Manila sound and kundiman on Nineteen 90 and Tagala Talaga. She is known for her vocal range and belting technique — and for an unorthodox childhood training that had her singing while immersed neck-deep in the sea.

An international deal with PolyGram brought Listen Without Prejudice (1994), which sold more than 700,000 copies across Asia and remains her best-selling album. R2K (1999) was certified twelve-times platinum in the Philippines. With more than seven million records sold at home and 1.5 million elsewhere in Asia, she is the best-selling Filipino music artist of all time; her honours include two Asian Television Awards, two MTV Asia Awards and 23 Awit Awards.

On screen she starred in the romantic comedies Kailangan Ko'y Ikaw (2000) and Pangako Ikaw Lang (2001), won a Star Award for an episode of Maalaala Mo Kaya and a Golden Screen Award for Of All the Things (2012), and has hosted or judged Star for a Night, Pinoy Pop Superstar, StarStruck, The Clash and Idol Philippines.
