Patricia Carola Velásquez Semprún
Patricia Velásquez was born on 31 January 1971 in Maracaibo, Venezuela, the fifth of six children of a mestizo father and a mother of indigenous Wayuu heritage. She speaks English, Spanish, French and Italian. As a model she walked for Chanel, Chloé, John Galliano, Claude Montana and Dolce & Gabbana, appeared on the covers of Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and Marie Claire, and was the face of CoverGirl for eight years — the brand's first Latin supermodel to cross into mainstream media.
After studying acting in Los Angeles and New York between 1995 and 2000, she became known worldwide as Anck-su-namun in The Mummy (1999) and The Mummy Returns (2001). Television followed: Begoña in The L Word, Marta Estrella in Arrested Development, and roles in Rescue Me, CSI: Miami, Ugly Betty and Hawaii Five-0. Her stage debut in the lead of School of the Americas at New York's Public Theater in 2006 was well received, and later films include The Curse of La Llorona (2019) and Malignant (2020).
In 2002 she founded the Wayuu Taya Foundation, a non-profit devoted to improving living conditions for the Wayuu people of north-western Venezuela and northern Colombia while preserving their traditions, and she has spoken at international forums and TED-related events on leadership, authenticity and resilience.
