Lorena Velázquez
"Queen of Fantasy Cinema" — scream queen of Mexican horror and Santo films, later a telenovela regular.
María Concepción Villar y Dondé
Lorena Velázquez was born María Concepción Villar y Dondé in Mexico City on 15 December 1939, the stepdaughter of the actor Víctor Velázquez and elder sister of the actress Tere Velázquez. Runner-up at Miss Mexico in 1958 and named Miss Mexico 1960, she declined to represent the country at Miss Universe because her acting career, with three films already under way, had become her priority.
In the 1960s she played everything from vedettes and cowgirls to the queen of the vampires — Santo contra los zombies (1961), Santo vs. las mujeres vampiro (1962), Las luchadoras vs. El Médico Asesino (1962), Atacan las brujas (1964), El planeta de las mujeres invasoras (1966), in which she played both an alien queen and her twin. Her recurring presence in Mexican horror made her a scream queen and earned her the title "La Reina del Cine Fantástico".
From the 1970s she moved between film and television, appearing over the decades in telenovelas such as El privilegio de amar (1998), Amigas y rivales (2001), Rubí (2004) and Alma de hierro (2008). She died on 11 April 2024, aged 84.
