José Antonio Velásquez
Self-taught "primitivist" painter of San Antonio de Oriente, Honduras's national treasure.
José Antonio Velásquez
José Antonio Velásquez was born in the department of Valle, Honduras, on 8 February 1906 and moved around 1930 to the mountain village of San Antonio de Oriente, working as a barber and telegraph operator. The village and its vivid rural life became the subject of his paintings — landscapes and street scenes rendered with a self-taught precision that critics call primitivist or folk art.
Despite his isolation his work was known nationally and internationally by the 1950s: he was included in the 1951 Latin American Art Biennial, exhibited in the United States, Germany, Spain and across Latin America, and was the subject of a 1972 documentary sponsored by the Organization of American States and narrated by Shirley Temple. His work hangs in the Art Museum of the Americas in Washington, D.C. He died of a heart attack in Tegucigalpa in 1983, mourned by writers such as Rafael Heleodoro Valle and Filadelfo Suazo as a national treasure.
