Héctor Velázquez Moreno
Héctor Velázquez Moreno was born in Mexico City in 1922 and studied at the UNAM's Faculty of Architecture from 1949, then at Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, with a scholarship that also took him to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
In the 1950s he worked with the leading architects of the day on the UNAM's Ciudad Universitaria, designed religious, residential and commercial buildings in Mexico and abroad, and co-designed the Plaza Jacaranda shopping centre (1957) in the Zona Rosa, a hub of the capital's fashion and artistic scenes. President of the Colegio de Arquitectos de la Ciudad de México from 1963 to 1965, he headed social housing for the Federal District, directed architecture and urban planning at the Ministry of Public Works and was general commissioner of construction at the UNAM. With Ramón Torres Martínez he founded Torres y Velázquez Arquitectos y Asociados, and in 1990 co-founded the Despacho de Arquitectos HV. He died in 2006.
