Fernando Velázquez Saiz
Fernando Velázquez was born on 22 November 1976 and trained as a cellist at the conservatories of Getxo, Bilbao and Vitoria, where he took the Excellence Award, before continuing in Paris and studying composition at the Royal Conservatory of Madrid (2003–07). He also holds a degree in contemporary history from the University of Deusto and played cello with the Santa Cecilia Classical Orchestra, Edinburgh University's symphony orchestra and the Basque Country Youth Orchestra.
His film career began in 1999 with short films for Koldo Serra, Igor Legarreta, Nacho Vigalondo and J. A. Bayona, among them Dime que yo (2008), winner of the Goya for best short. He has now scored more than fifty features, and is best known for Bayona's The Orphanage, The Impossible and A Monster Calls, which won him the Goya Award for Best Original Score in 2017. He wrote the music for Campamento Flipy (2010) under the pseudonym Spinny Walder.
