Eugenio Lucas Velázquez
Romantic painter of costumbrista scenes in the wake of Goya, honorary court painter to Isabel II.
Eugenio Lucas Velázquez (also recorded as Eugenio Lucas Padilla)
Eugenio Lucas Velázquez was born in Madrid on 9 February 1817 to a middle-class family and began as a cabinet-maker. His training is hard to reconstruct: he claimed to have studied at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando under José de Madrazo, exhibited four works there in 1841 and spent long hours at the Prado copying Goya and Diego Velázquez, whose influence shaped his Romantic genre scenes with their frequent fantastic touches.
In 1850 he was among the artists chosen to decorate the ceiling of the new Teatro Real; Queen Isabel II, attending the opening, named him honorary court painter and a Knight of the Order of Charles III, and his clients thereafter came largely from the upper nobility, notably the Marqués de Salamanca. A trip to Paris in 1852 brought him under the influence of Delacroix, and further journeys in the 1860s took him to Paris, Switzerland and Italy.
Few of his paintings are signed, which has made attribution difficult. His son by Francisca Villaamil, Eugenio Lucas Villaamil, also became a painter. He died in Madrid on 11 September 1870.
How the name is written
Nineteenth-century sources call him Eugenio Lucas Padilla; Velázquez appears to have been an adopted name — a tribute, perhaps, to the master he copied at the Prado.
