José Velásquez
Soldier-explorer of the Californias who scouted the mission sites of El Rosario, Santo Domingo and San Vicente.
José Velásquez (1717–1785)
José Velásquez was born in 1717 at San Ildefonso de Ostimuri, in what became the province of Sonora, and in 1751 enlisted as a private in the garrison at Loreto, Baja California, then administered by the Jesuit missions. When the Jesuits were expelled in 1768 he was promoted corporal and appears to have travelled with the Portolá expedition, the first overland party to San Diego and Monterey in 1769–70, serving under Fernando Rivera y Moncada; from Monterey he carried dispatches overland to southern Baja California and on to San Blas and Mexico City.
Promoted sergeant in 1771 and alférez in 1773, he commanded the detachment at Velicatá and led the expeditions that located the sites of the Dominican missions of El Rosario, Santo Domingo and San Vicente, also exploring the desert east of the Sierra San Pedro Mártir. Transferred to the presidio of San Diego as second in command in 1780, he left diaries and reports that remain a source for the early history of the Californias. He died in 1785.
